When I think of birthdays, I know many people imagine grand celebrations, balloons, cakes, and big surprises. But truthfully, I’ve never had birthday parties like that. Growing up, I carried so many expectations, hoping for something magical to happen on my special day. And yes, I always had people who wished me well, who made me feel loved in their own ways. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to let go of those high expectations.
Now, at 32, I realize that birthdays can be just as special without all the noise and glamour. This year, my birthday felt different in the most beautiful way. It wasn’t about grand surprises; it was about gratitude. I woke up simply thankful for another day in this precious life God has blessed me with, a chance to live it rightfully, peacefully, and meaningfully with the people I love.
My day unfolded in the most heartwarming way. My son was so excited, he drew me a beautiful little picture, a drawing that carried more love than any store-bought gift ever could. To see his joy and his effort touched me deeply; it reminded me that the purest gifts in life often come from tiny hands and big hearts.
Later, I had a long call with my mother, who lives far away. As always, we slipped into our usual rhythm, chit chats, light gossip, laughter, and those non-judgmental conversations only a mother and daughter can share. Her voice alone was a comfort, like wrapping myself in a piece of home.
Throughout the day, I received warm wishes from my immediate family, each one a little spark of love and remembrance. My husband surprised me with a thoughtful gift, simple, sweet, and full of meaning. And then came one of the highlights of my day: a one-hour and forty-minute call with my best friend. We laughed, caught up, and shared stories, the kind of conversation that makes time disappear and leaves your heart full.
No parties. No cake. No extravagant surprises. Just another day, but in a way, it was the most perfect day. Peaceful, calm, and filled with love in its purest form. And as I sat with this feeling, I realized that for the first time in my life, I didn’t wish for “more.” I didn’t long for what wasn’t there. I was simply happy, right where I was.
Now, as I write this while my little boy naps peacefully beside me, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming calmness. Life feels simple, yet extraordinary when you learn to appreciate it for what it truly is. I’ve come to understand that happiness doesn’t always live in grand moments; sometimes it’s tucked into ordinary days, waiting for us to notice.
Grateful, always. 💛 Haji
